“When I’m asked occasionally where my studio is, I usually answer, “my kitchen table.” Most of my work is small, so I don’t need a lot of room. I enjoy painting outdoors when possible, though I often refine and finish landscapes inside, where I also work on collages, monoprints and paintings from imagination. I use watercolor, gouache, acrylic, ink, pencil, crayons, tempera and casein. The monoprints employ small plastic plates and watercolor paint...”

“Accident, error, failure, which we dread so often in “real life,” are the seedbed of art’s exploration, the guideposts, if we are open to its richest possibilities. The lessons of patient engagement, of sticking to it until you get it right, are among the many gifts offered along the way.”
“When I began painting in my early twenties I was alienated from my family’s expectations for me. I was actively opposed to the war in which my country tried to make me fight. I was disaffected from America’s competitive values, despite my own competitive core. I had few practical skills, a violent aversion to structure and formal education, and I still half-believed an idea I’d absorbed while growing up: that unless one is born with the ability to draw, with a gift of “genius,” it is pointless to even begin. To my amazement, I found that even though I had no innate ability to render things, I was able to learn to draw through daily practice. The small thrills of accomplishment encouraged me to continue."
“Although I’ve never attended art school, the term “self taught” is, in my case, an oversimplification. I’ve had many informal teachers along the way. Years before I began to paint, I enjoyed looking through my mother’s art books. Among them was a series of large monographs from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, including the haunted landscapes of El Greco. Since then the work of other painters, from all cultures and epochs, has continued to be a profound and sustaining influence, suggesting varied possibilities. Individual artists I have known have been gracious mentors. Raphael Astarita, Reuben Tam, Glenn Myles and Jim Campbell responded warmly to me and my work at critical moments.”
